We've organized, we've protested, we've held town halls and strategy meetings, we've called our representatives, we've written letters and postcards, we've boycotted, we've stood by our Black, Brown, Immigrant, Refugee, Muslim, LGBTQ sisters and brothers; we've resisted. And as Young Democrats, our desire to stand up and fight back is undoubtedly influenced and inspired by those who've come before us, those who are leading the resistance.
We'll honor three of these very special leaders at the 2017 Spring Awards: Voices from the Resistance. Join us this Wednesday, March 29th from 6:30 - 8:30pm at El Rio (3158 Mission St.; 21+) to celebrate our honorees!
LEADER OF THE RESISTANCE: JANE KIM
District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim isn't one to shy away from a tough fight. From her unwavering efforts to create Free City College, to her commitment to protecting tenants and our LGBTQ community, Supervisor Kim has been on the frontlines fighting for our city's most vulnerable communities. After a hard fought race for State Senate, she wasted no time in rolling up her sleeves and getting back to work, ensuring the Board of Supervisors is arming itself with the legislation we'll need to defend the city of Saint Francis against the Trump agenda. Her push to hold city government accountable and her unflappable fight for affordable housing has impacted Young Dems across the City, earning her our vote as the leader we know we can count on in the years of the Resistance to come.
VOICE OF THE PEOPLE: INDIVISIBLE GUIDE
Responding to Trump's election, a group of former congressional staffers came together to write what would quickly become an everyday toolkit for not just surviving but overcoming the Trump presidency. Since the Guide's publication, over 4,500 local groups have committed themselves to resisting the Trump agenda, creating a network of resistance spanning almost every congressional district in the country. From lessons on mass calls to office sit-ins, the Indivisible Guide has inspired countless Young Dems to get organized and get active in our generation's greatest call to action. We're honored to welcome co-author Jeremy Haile to accept this award on behalf of the Indivisible Guide team. While he's not authoring guides that organize and activate historic progressive grassroots movements, Jeremy is working on criminal justice reform advocacy at The Sequence Project and is a public interest lawyer in San Francisco. He previously served as a legislative aide for Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D- Austin) along with Indivisible board members Ezra Levin and Sarah Dohl. Thanks to the members who voted for our first ever membership Voice of the People award - your voice has been heard!
THE SERGIO ALVA RISING STAR OF THE YEAR: SHANELL WILLIAMS
As an SF native and fellow SFYD member, Shanell Williams
is one of the fiercest fighters our city and our club has ever seen. After years as a community organizer, youth advocate, City College Student Trustee and key fighter in the Save City College campaign, Shanell continued to inspire us all by running for office (and she won!) - empowering young women in her community to rise up and run too. She now serves on the City College Board of Trustees, where she's worked tirelessly to ensure Free City College became a reality. Her fearless leadership in the face of adversity and her dedication to her community has earned her our most beloved award, honoring those who embody the same generosity and leadership as our late friend and member Sergio Alva.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!!
SFYD would like to thank the elected officials and companies who generously agreed to sponsor our event! Not only is this a fun party and chance to hear from the leaders that are inspiring young democrats to activate, organize and resist, this is also an important fundraising event to raise money to support our programs: sending members to the 2017 California Democratic Party State Convention, hosting member education events (workshops, panels, etc), leadership training, voter registration drives, phonebanks, campaign support, prepping for 2018 races and more. Thank you to for supporting the next generation of democrat leaders:
